Doncaster Sheffield Airport
New Name, New Sign
Following Robin Hood Airport’s rebranding to Doncaster Sheffield Airport, it was determined that the existing terminal signage should be updated to reflect the new identity and the modern, contemporary image that the airport desired to project. Our company was approached to develop and execute a new design concept for the signage that would not only serve as a functional wayfinding tool for the airport, but also add to the overall experience for visitors.
The terminal building at Doncaster Sheffield Airport has a distinct design, featuring a fully glazed front elevation that can be seen from a great distance as you approach the airport. This presented a unique challenge for our team when designing the new signage, as it was important to ensure that the sign complemented the building's aesthetic and did not detract from the overall visual appeal.
To achieve this, we manufactured and installed a set of large aluminium powder-coated letters with opal acrylic faces displaying the airport name. The letters were mounted on a custom-designed steel framework that was engineered to withstand the elements and provide a secure foundation for the sign, while subtly blending in with window frames. In addition to the letters, we also created a light box shaped to resemble an airplane tail fin. This light box featured a PVC flex face with the airport's logo digitally printed onto it, adding a touch of elegance to the design.
The feature that truly sets this new sign apart from the former airport signage is the inclusion of programmable RGB LED lights. These lights were installed in both the letters and light box, allowing for a wide range of colour options and animation patterns to be displayed. The RGB LED controller was connected to the airport’s secure Wi-Fi network and provided their marketing department remote control to showcase airline branding and special events in a dynamic and visually striking way. In addition, bright white LED lights were also installed, ensuring that the sign had great visual impact even when not displaying colour. In total, over 4,000 LEDs were used in the design, making it one of the most technologically advanced airport signs in the region.
The final result exceeded the customer's expectations and has been praised by both airport staff and visitors alike. The sign not only serves as a functional wayfinding tool for the airport, but also as a visually striking feature that adds to the overall experience for visitors. The new sign is a testament to the expertise and innovation of our team and showcases our ability to create customized solutions that meet the unique needs of our clients.
